Uses of Product Roadmap Templates

A product roadmap is a strategic guide outlining the long-term vision and direction for a product in initial development and beyond. Roadmaps help to align the goals of internal and external stakeholders, serving as a planning, communication, and resource management tool all in one.

Roadmaps can include multiple products or services, and they’re typically presented in a calendar or timeline format spanning at least six months. Depending on the type of product and its status, a roadmap may provide a summary of key developmental milestones and future upgrades as well as any supporting research or marketing strategies involved in the product release.

Organizations use product roadmaps for everything from hiring to quarterly planning. Armed with clear business goals for the year, organizations can decide when to invest in more resources, acquire extra skill sets, communicate plans to customers, and pace product releases to earn steady revenue.

How to create your own Product Roadmap

Making a product roadmap takes time, planning, and collaboration. You’ll need to work with stakeholders across different teams to come up with a timeline for developing, releasing, and upgrading the product. Here’s how to get started:
1

First, open the Product Roadmap Template in Cacoo. In the first column, add the names of the product(s) you want to include in the roadmap.

2

Define the phases of your product strategy. How much work is required to complete the product? Are you developing an entirely new product or updating an existing one?

3

Consider what the product brings to the market and how you plan to introduce it to customers.

4

Now, list the milestones you must achieve in each phase and their duration. You can adjust the milestone arrows to show when a project starts and ends.

When you’re finished, share the plan with stakeholders and come to a consensus on the milestones. You’ll need buy-in from everyone involved to make sure you achieve your goals within the timeline.
